The visit to Prague was unplanned – I had to urgently drive from the middle of Germany to Mladá Boleslav to a global car manufacturer head office to work on a priority 1 ticket. Mladá Boleslav is around 50 kms North East of Prague. And I was driving on Thursday afternoon, to work on Friday and return on Friday night. Instead we decided to make this a family trip, and spend the pre-Christmas weekend in Prague. Turned out to be one of the best decisions ever. “Christmassy Prague” is so much more beautiful than “Regular Prague”!
Side note – I visited “Regular Prague” on a business trip earlier the same year. My life’s first shared private flight. And with that, we will not talk about work anymore on this post!
Christmassy Prague
Since my family was to be alone most of the day on Friday, I ensured we had a good place where kiddo could be kept busy. And safe. Prague is a well known tourist destination, and hotels are pretty expensive during Christmas season. Hotel Castle Residence Praha was a good one just outside the main city, accessible by tram. I found tram to be the easiest way to explore the city and kept the car at the hotel.
First city stop was the St. Vitus Cathedral inside the Prague castle compounds. It has Gothic architecture and is one of the most beautiful cathedral around the world. The complex itself is pretty old, and dates to the 9th century.
The views from the top of the hill / Castle viewing towers are stunning. The Castle complex, the city and the river, all come together to leave you with an experience that cannot be forgotten. The Great South Tower is open to public and you can climb some 300 steps to get to the top. Expect a lot of traffic on route.
The Old Town of Prague is a lively cobblestoned hub with landmark attractions such as the medieval Astronomical Clock and the Old Town Square. During Christmas, this place develops a very colorful and crowded character and gives out a feeling of warmth, despite the cold weather.
And last but not the least, the Charles Bridge, one of the most famous landmarks of Prague. This is a landmark stone bridge linked Old and New Prague across the River Vltava.
Prague is definitely not a city which can be completely explored over a weekend. The short trip left a lot to be wanting and to be explored. Still, the 2 days allowed us to cover the heart of the city during festive season and it was one of the best short trips ever.
