From Electricity and Oil to AI: Why Great Breakthroughs Create Divides

A Point of View on AI, Access, and the Pattern History Keeps Repeating

AI is often described as the new electricity or the new oil.

These comparisons are powerful because they signal scale. Electricity transformed every industry it touched. Oil powered modern mobility, trade, and industrial expansion. AI, too, is expected to reshape productivity, decision-making, creativity, and human capability.

I agree with that framing — but only partially.

The more important point, in my view, is this:

Every major discovery or innovation creates progress for some people first, while leaving others behind — at least for a period of time.
In other words, every revolution creates a divide.

This is not unique to AI. It is a recurring pattern in human progress.

And unless we address it directly, AI may become the latest and fastest version of the same old story.

The Pattern We Keep Missing: Innovation Does Not Arrive Equally

When a breakthrough technology emerges, public conversation usually focuses on what it can do.

  • How fast it is
  • How much it can automate
  • How much money it can generate
  • How dramatically it can change industries

What gets less attention is how unevenly those benefits are distributed, especially in the early and scaling phases.

A technology may be revolutionary in principle, but in practice its impact depends on:

  • who can access it,
  • who can afford it,
  • who can use it effectively,
  • and who can build systems around it.

That is why the true effect of innovation is not just transformation. It is transformation plus separation.

Some move ahead quickly. Others are delayed. Some are excluded entirely.

Electricity Changed the World — But Not for Everyone at the Same Time

Electricity is one of the clearest examples of a technology that transformed human life while also exposing structural inequality.

For those with reliable electricity, it enabled:

  • longer productive hours,
  • safer homes,
  • better healthcare,
  • modern education,
  • refrigeration,
  • industrial scale.

For those without it, everyday life remained constrained by time, geography, infrastructure, and cost.

Even where access eventually reached people, reliability and quality remained uneven.

This is an important lesson:
Technology access is not binary. It is not simply “have” or “have not.”

There are layers:

  • access,
  • reliability,
  • affordability,
  • usability,
  • and quality of outcomes.

That same layered inequality is now visible in AI.

The Internet Connected Billions — and Still Left Billions Behind

The internet is often celebrated as the great connector of modern society. And rightly so.

It created unprecedented access to:

  • information,
  • communication,
  • commerce,
  • education,
  • employment,
  • and global collaboration.

But the internet also showed us something uncomfortable:

Connectivity alone does not guarantee inclusion.

The digital divide has always existed in multiple forms:

  • no access,
  • poor connectivity,
  • unaffordable data,
  • weak devices,
  • limited digital literacy,
  • language barriers,
  • low trust in digital systems.

So when we say “the internet changed everything,” we should also ask:

Changed everything for whom — and on what timeline?

The answer matters because AI is now being built on top of this uneven digital foundation.

Oil Powered Growth — But Only Where Systems Existed to Use It

Oil did not create value simply by existing. It created value where nations, industries, and institutions built ecosystems around it:

  • extraction,
  • refining,
  • transportation,
  • manufacturing,
  • logistics,
  • market integration.

The lesson here is directly relevant to AI.

AI is not just a tool. It is an ecosystem-dependent capability.

Like oil, AI becomes valuable only when paired with:

  • infrastructure,
  • talent,
  • capital,
  • governance,
  • and operational integration.

That means the AI conversation cannot stop at model capability.
It must include institutional readiness and societal access.

AI Is Following the Same Historical Pattern — Only Faster

AI is not creating the first technology divide. It is accelerating a pattern we have seen before.

Those who already have the right conditions are moving first:

  • strong digital infrastructure,
  • data access,
  • technical talent,
  • experimentation budgets,
  • leadership sponsorship,
  • platform access,
  • and learning capacity.

They are not just adopting AI — they are compounding advantage through AI.

Meanwhile, others face barriers that are less visible in AI headlines:

  • lack of access to quality tools,
  • low AI literacy,
  • uncertainty about use cases,
  • fear of job displacement,
  • limited time to learn,
  • weak governance and trust,
  • and language/cultural misalignment.

This is why I believe the central AI question is not only:
“How powerful will AI become?”

It is also:
“Who gets to benefit meaningfully from that power — and who does not?”

“AI Will Not Replace You, But People Using AI Will” — A Useful Statement, but Not a New Idea

This statement resonates because it captures a real shift in competitive advantage.

In many roles today, AI users can:

  • research faster,
  • write faster,
  • summarize faster,
  • prototype faster,
  • analyze faster,
  • and scale their output with greater leverage.

So yes — in many cases, the real competition is becoming:

person without AI vs person using AI effectively.

But we should recognize that this is not an AI-specific phenomenon.

The same pattern has existed in earlier eras:

  • people using electricity outpaced those without reliable power,
  • people using motorized transport outpaced those who relied on slower systems,
  • people using the internet outcompeted those locked out of digital access,
  • people using software outperformed those limited to manual workflows.

AI is not changing the existence of this pattern.
It is changing the speed and scale at which the gap can widen.

That is what makes this moment so important.

The Real Risk Is Not AI Itself — It Is Unequal AI Adoption at Scale

A lot of debate today is framed in extremes:

  • AI will replace everyone,
  • AI is overhyped,
  • AI will solve everything,
  • AI will destroy everything.

The more practical and strategic concern, in my view, is different:

AI benefits may concentrate faster than society can distribute access, skills, and safeguards.

If that happens, we may see widening gaps across:

  • productivity,
  • earnings,
  • employability,
  • business competitiveness,
  • education quality,
  • healthcare support,
  • and national development trajectories.

This creates what I would call a multi-layer AI divide:

1) Individual Divide

Some individuals use AI daily and improve their leverage. Others remain hesitant, excluded, or under-trained.

2) Enterprise Divide

Organizations that integrate AI responsibly move faster than those stuck in pilot mode or fear-driven paralysis.

3) National Divide

Countries with compute, talent, policy agility, and digital infrastructure will compound advantage faster.

4) Language and Cultural Divide

If AI tools work best only in dominant languages and contexts, many communities remain under-served by design.

5) Trust and Safety Divide

Access to AI without trustworthy, safe, and relevant systems can create new harms instead of new value.

This is why “adoption quality” matters as much as adoption speed.

Why Model Performance Alone Is the Wrong Center of the Conversation

Much of the AI discourse is benchmark-driven:

  • which model is smartest,
  • fastest,
  • cheapest,
  • or best at reasoning.

Those are important questions, but they are incomplete.

History shows that breakthrough technologies create broad societal change only when ecosystems mature around them.

For AI, that ecosystem includes:

  • reliable electricity and internet,
  • affordable access,
  • devices and computing infrastructure,
  • local language support,
  • training and AI literacy,
  • governance and responsible AI guardrails,
  • institutional trust,
  • and practical use case enablement.

Without this, AI remains highly capable — but narrowly distributed.

In other words:

A high-performing model does not automatically create an inclusive future.

A Better Framing for Leaders, Policymakers, and Institutions

Instead of asking only, “How fast can we adopt AI?”, we should ask higher-quality questions:

  • Who is being enabled first — and who is being left out?
  • What skills must be democratized, not concentrated?
  • How do we make AI useful beyond elite digital users?
  • How do we support responsible adoption in low-resource environments?
  • How do we reduce the time lag between innovation and inclusion?

This is not anti-innovation thinking. It is mature innovation thinking.

Every major technology creates asymmetry at first.
The real test of leadership is whether we reduce that asymmetry over time.

What Responsible Progress Looks Like in the AI Era

If we accept that every innovation creates a divide, then the goal is not to deny the divide. The goal is to design against permanent exclusion.

That requires action across stakeholders.

For Governments and Public Systems

  • Invest in digital infrastructure as foundational AI infrastructure
  • Expand affordable access to connectivity and devices
  • Build AI literacy into education and workforce programs
  • Encourage local-language AI tools and content
  • Create enabling policy with safety, not fear, as the center

For Enterprises

  • Move beyond executive-only AI adoption
  • Train teams broadly, not selectively
  • Build practical use cases tied to outcomes
  • Create guardrails for quality, safety, and accountability
  • Measure not only productivity gains but adoption breadth

For Educators and Institutions

  • Teach judgment, verification, and critical thinking alongside AI use
  • Support learners across skill levels and languages
  • Focus on applied capability, not just tool familiarity

For Individuals

  • Start small, but start
  • Learn one workflow deeply before chasing every new tool
  • Use AI to enhance thinking, not replace thinking
  • Build adaptability — the real long-term advantage

My Point of View

AI will absolutely create extraordinary value.

But it will not distribute that value automatically.

That has never been true for electricity.
It was never true for oil.
It was never true for the internet.
And it will not be true for AI.

So yes, the popular line is directionally correct:

AI may not replace you directly, but people using AI may outperform those who do not.

My addition to that argument is this:

That is not just an AI warning — it is a historical pattern of innovation.
And the true leadership challenge is not only to accelerate adoption, but to reduce exclusion.

If we ignore the divide, AI will amplify existing inequality.
If we address it intentionally, AI can become a force multiplier for broader human progress.

The future will not be shaped only by the power of AI.
It will be shaped by the fairness of access to that power.

Every transformative technology creates winners early. That is normal.

What is not inevitable is how long others stay excluded.

This is where governments, businesses, educators, and individuals all have a role to play.

The next chapter of AI should not be written only as a story of capability.
It should also be written as a story of inclusion, access, and responsible progress.

Because in the end, the question is not whether AI will change the world.

The question is:
Will we build a world where more people can benefit from that change — in time?
