The Expanding AI Bubble: Are We Seeing Less of the Real World?

In our digitized age, artificial intelligence has swiftly become an inseparable part of our daily life. From retail conglomerates like Amazon to the largest search engine, Google, and advanced language models like GPT-4, AI is the invisible thread shaping our digital interactions.

However, this technological marvel may not be as neutral as we would like to believe. As AI continues to insinuate itself into our interactions, are we losing touch with the unfiltered reality of the world?

Amazon, which began as an online bookstore in the mid-’90s, has grown into a retail colossus. By applying AI in predicting customer behavior and recommending products, it has cornered the online retail market.

Today, an Amazon Basics product often tops the list for any product search, edging out other retailers and channeling customer preferences within a controlled bubble.

The AI algorithms curate a reality that favors Amazon and its in-house brands, potentially marginalizing independent retailers and diversity of choice.

Google, the gatekeeper of online information, uses complex AI algorithms to serve the most relevant search results to its users. However, over time, these algorithms have been under scrutiny for potential biases in their search results.

Numerous independent bodies – those espousing to be ‘beneficial for the public’ – have reviewed Google’s search algorithms. Yet, these organizations themselves are not immune to bias.

The result? An ecosystem of algorithmic bias where the search results might not reflect the true state of the world but rather portray a sanitized, bubble-wrapped version of reality.

Lastly, GPT-4, OpenAI’s language model, ushers in a new age of AI bubble. It allows users to conduct searches using natural language processing, improving usability and accessibility for non-technical users.

However, the nature of this AI-powered search means every result is inevitably filtered through the model’s programming.

The AI acts as an intermediary between the user’s query and the actual search, which can result in filtered or biased responses.
